History of Koala Club

Established in 1984

History of the Koala Club in Bossier City, LA

The Koala Club in Bossier City, Louisiana, was established in 1984 to provide a dedicated meeting space for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Al‑Anon, and other self‑help groups after the founders faced difficulties securing rental space elsewhere.

The club was created by a small group of committed and industrious members who purchased a metal building, leased land from the city of Bossier City, and began construction on the facility they still use today. The name “Koala” was chosen because koalas are known for not drinking water, and the word is thought to have meant “no drink” in one of the Australian Aboriginal languages.

Purpose and Services

From its inception, the Koala Club’s mission was to offer a safe, consistent, and affordable venue for recovery meetings. It now hosts meetings seven days a week, serving hundreds of people daily and providing a stable environment for AA, Al‑Anon, and other self‑help groups.

Development and Legacy

The founders’ dedication to creating a permanent home for these groups has been a central part of the club’s identity. The organization honors their legacy by continuing to operate the facility and uphold the values they established. The club’s rules emphasize respect, cleanliness, and sobriety, reflecting the principles of the self‑help groups it serves.

Current Status

Today, the Koala Club remains an active nonprofit, offering a safe space for recovery and community support. It is recognized as a civic and social organization, with a long history of service to individuals seeking sobriety and personal growth.

In short: The Koala Club’s history is one of community service, perseverance, and dedication to helping individuals in recovery, rooted in the vision of its 1984 founders and sustained by the values they set.
